John W. Beaty is a Texas and Dallas born native who grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas graduating from South Oak Cliff High School in 1961. He went on to graduate from the then North Texas State University in Denton, Texas, graduating in three years with a Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Psychology with minors in English and Biology. He worked as a librarian at the Dallas Public Library while pursuing a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. This pursuit was interrupted in 1966, when John entered the US Naval Officer Training in Newport, Rhode Island. He served as a Communications Officer in Morocco and finished his service as a Lieutenant in Charleston, South Carolina. During and right after his service he was privileged to travel throughout Morocco and Europe.
John dabbled with journalism and writing before returning to North Texas State University to finish his Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, with his thesis dealing with the measurement of creativity in a general population. His work experience began in Shawnee and Holdenville, Oklahoma, working with a rural population and performing psychological testing and treatment of children, adolescents, and families through the Oklahoma Health Department. He returned to Dallas to work as a school psychologist from 1972 to 1977. During these years, John met and married his wife of 36 years. He decided to pursue his PhD in Counseling Psychology, again at North Texas State University, where he graduated with the PhD in 1983. He was working at Terrell State Hospital from 1980 to 1986, where he was Supervising Psychologist on the Substance-Abuse Unit.
Dr. Beaty's experience is extensive and wide-ranging. With training and experience with children, adolescents, and psychological testing from 1971 to the present. He has worked for the Family Guidance Center as the Supervising Psychologist and during that time gained forensic experience, primarily with sexual abuse and child custody cases. He established a private practice in 1987 and accepted the position of Director of Allied Health and Psychology at Willow Park Hospital in Plano, Texas. He also maintained a full-time private practice. His experience at Terrell State Hospital prepared him well for treating adults experiencing severe emotional disorders and dual diagnosis disorders of substance abuse. He has worked with inpatient populations in several hospital settings. Dr. Beaty is dually licensed as a Psychologist and as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. He has board certification for the Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders through the APA College of Professional Psychology. Dr. Beaty treats most addictive disorders. In 1987 Dr. Beaty was accepted into the prestigious National Register of Psychologists. Over the years, Dr. Beaty has worked at Plano Child Guidance Clinic and was later a board member and interim director of that agency. He also helped establish the Collin County Mental Health Association and the Collin County Psychological Association. He has worked with the elderly in Long Term Care facilities. Dr. Beaty has been active in the community as well, being on two school improvement boards, consulting with the Plano ISD, judging at district science fairs, and being an Assistant Scout Master.
